## Why is breast cancer diagnosed so late in low-income countries?

Breast cancer is diagnosed late in many low-income countries because there is no organised screening. Stage drives survival: in England stage 1 is almost 100% at five years; stage 4 is more than 30%. This appeal funds earlier exams and referrals — not a UK helpline. Donate from £25.

Late diagnosis is not a mystery gene. It is months or years with a lump, no reminder to check, no affordable clinic, and fear of what a visit might cost. Women wait because waiting feels cheaper than finding out. By the time the disease is impossible to ignore, options have narrowed.

In the UK, a new symptom belongs with a GP and, if referred, an urgent suspected-cancer pathway. ## What is the late-stage diagnosis crisis?

The late-stage diagnosis crisis is that most breast cancers in underserved regions are still found after the disease has spread, when treatment is harder and survival is lower. This campaign funds the two proven shifts: information that brings women in earlier, and an exam they can afford when they arrive.

We use England’s stage figures as an illustration of the cliff, not as a claim that every partner site will match NHS outcomes. ## How much does stage at diagnosis change survival?

A great deal, in systems that can treat what they find. Cancer Research UK reports almost 100% five-year survival at stage 1 in England and more than 30% at stage 4 for women diagnosed 2018–2022. Earlier presentation is the lever this appeal funds. It is not a guarantee of those percentages overseas.

Stage 2 is around 90% and stage 3 around 75% in that same England series. The drop from early to late is the argument for screening and for community awareness. It is also why we refuse to print a fake “lives saved” ticker. Survival depends on treatment that is actually available after the exam.

## What does the late-stage diagnosis appeal fund?

This appeal funds community awareness, subsidised clinical examinations, and help to reach biopsy and specialist care so fewer women are found at stage 3 or 4. It does not fund laboratory research. £25 still maps to one complete screening pathway. Please donate.
