Donate in memory of someone who had breast cancer

We are sorry for your loss. A gift in someone’s memory helps another woman get checked, diagnosed and treated in time. You can give once, ask for donations instead of flowers, or remember them over the years.

Quick answer

Donate online and choose “In memory of”, then add their name and a short message if you wish. For a funeral, write “donations in lieu of flowers to Breast Cancer Charity” in the notice and share breastcancer-charity.org/donate-in-memory/. Email info@worldaidnetwork.org before the funeral to pay in cash or cheques.

Three ways to give in memory

  • Give once in their name

Choose any amount, select “In memory of” and add their name. You can add a short message for the Dedication Wall.

    Give in their memory
  • Donations instead of flowers

Ask mourners to give in lieu of flowers. Online gifts carry the person’s name, and cash collected on the day can be paid in afterwards.

    Set up a funeral collection
  • Remember them over time

Give on their birthday or an anniversary, set up a monthly gift in their name, or fundraise in their memory during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

How to set up a funeral or memorial collection

You do not need to register or sign up. These five steps cover most funerals, cremations and memorial services.

  1. Choose your wording

Decide whether you would like flowers as well, or donations only. You can copy the wording below and change the name.

How to write an obituary or death notice

  2. Add it to the funeral notice and order of service

Include the web address breastcancer-charity.org/donate-in-memory/ so people can give online, wherever they live.

Publish or find a funeral notice on FuneralFinder

  3. Ask people to add the same name

Online gifts are recorded with the name typed in the dedication, so ask everyone to use the same spelling, for example “Margaret Smith”.

  4. Tell your funeral director

If they are collecting donations for you, ask them to email info@worldaidnetwork.org before the funeral and we will explain how to pay in.

Find a funeral director near you

  5. Collecting cash or cheques on the day?

Count it with another person, then email info@worldaidnetwork.org and we will explain how to pay it in through World Aid Network. We never ask for card details by email.

Good to know: we cannot yet offer an online tribute page with a running total, and we are not listed on JustGiving or similar sites while our registration is in progress. What we cannot offer yet, and why.

Wording for a funeral notice or order of service

Copy any of these, put in their name and delete anything that does not apply. Keep the web address as it is, so people land on this page.

Let the family know

A tribute on the Dedication Wall

The name and message you add to your gift can appear on our Dedication Wall. We read every tribute before it is published.

A card for the family

Make a card that says a gift was given in their memory, then print it or save it as a PDF. It is made in your browser, and nothing you type is saved.

If you are grieving

We are a fundraising campaign, not a bereavement service. In the UK, Cruse Bereavement Support offers free support after a death, and Samaritans is there to listen on 116 123, day or night. Elsewhere, your doctor can point you to local support. Our breast cancer support page lists other helplines.

Questions about giving in memory

How do I donate in memory of someone?
Go to our donate page, choose an amount, open “Add a dedication”, choose “In memory of” and type their name. You can add a short message too. The “Give in their memory” button on this page opens the form with “In memory of” already chosen.
What does “in lieu of flowers” mean?
It means “instead of flowers”. Families use it in a funeral notice to ask people to give to a charity rather than send flowers. “Family flowers only” means close family will still send flowers.
How much should I give in memory of someone?
There is no right amount. Many people give about what they would have spent on flowers or a card. £25 can fund one complete breast screening.
Can I give in memory of someone who did not die of breast cancer?
Yes. You can remember anyone with a gift, whether they died of breast cancer, lived with it for many years, or never had it.
Will the family know that I gave?
Not automatically. Your tribute can appear on our Dedication Wall after review, and you can print a card to give or send to the family.
Can our funeral director send you the collection?
Yes. Ask them to email info@worldaidnetwork.org before the funeral, and we will explain how to pay it in.
Can I set up an online tribute page?
Not yet. We are not listed on JustGiving or similar sites while our Charity Commission registration is in progress. Share breastcancer-charity.org/donate-in-memory/ instead, and ask people to add the same name to their dedication.
Can I give monthly in their memory?
Yes. Choose Monthly on the donate form and add an “In memory of” dedication. You can change or cancel any time by emailing info@worldaidnetwork.org.
Is Gift Aid added to gifts in memory?
Gift Aid is not currently claimed. If you tick the Gift Aid box at checkout, we keep your declaration for a possible future claim.
Can I give in memory from outside the UK?
Yes. You can give online in pounds, US dollars or euros and add an “In memory of” dedication. Gifts are not tax-deductible in the United States or other countries.
